Columbia curettes

are universal periodontal instruments used in dentistry to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from both supragingival and subgingival tooth surfaces during scaling and root planing procedures. They are widely used by dental hygienists and periodontists for periodontal cleaning and maintenance.

Main characteristics

  • Universal curette: can be used on both anterior and posterior teeth.

  • Double cutting edges: both sides of the blade are sharpened.

  • Rounded toe: reduces trauma to the gingival tissue.

  • 90° blade angle to the shank: allows good adaptation to the root surface.

  • Double-ended design: improves efficiency when scaling different tooth surfaces.

Common Columbia curette numbers

Some common models include:

  • Columbia 2R/2L – mainly for anterior teeth.

  • Columbia 4R/4L – used for posterior teeth and heavier deposits.

Clinical use

Columbia curettes are used to:

  • Remove calculus and plaque

  • Perform subgingival scaling

  • Perform root planing in periodontal treatment

  • Clean moderate to heavy deposits around teeth
